Even if every single employee who lost their job amid the COVID-19 pandemic returned to work, there would still be 45,000 positions to fill, Ross said. Here's how big the problem is: Right now there are 47,000 job openings in the eight counties that are served by SCPa Works, which invests in initiatives to boost the region's economy. While the hospitality industry is the hardest hit, manufacturing, health care, transportation and logistics, and retail are feeling the pressure, too. "The labor shortage is one issue facing all businesses in every industry sector," said Mike Ross, president of Franklin County Area Development Corp. It may seem great on the surface - economic growth! job opportunities! - but in the Franklin County region, like in many places around the country, there are just not enough workers to support the industries that need them. Nearly everywhere you look, there is a warehouse being built, a new store or a now-hiring sign.
